The Alpinist is a feature documentary following the life and climbs of Canadian alpinist Marc-André Leclerc, known for climbing some of the world’s most difficult alpine routes completely alone with no ropes - a rare case of alpine free-solo climbing. Filmed across remote mountain environments, including Patagonia and the Canadian Rockies, the project combines expedition filmmaking with athlete-driven storytelling to translate the experience of alpine climbing to the screen.

The Challenge
Producing The Alpinist meant building a feature documentary around an athlete who rarely told anyone where he was going next. Marc-André Leclerc climbed primarily for himself, often disappearing into remote alpine terrain across the Canadian Rockies, Alaska, and Patagonia without cameras present.
For the production team, capturing those moments required expedition logistics, permitting alpine free-solo climbs (without ropes) in national and provincial parks, coordinating helicopter access to remote mountain locations, and working within narrow weather and avalanche windows where a few degrees of temperature change could determine whether a climb was possible. Many objectives could not be repeated, so every shoot required careful planning while remaining flexible enough to adapt to rapidly changing alpine conditions.
Production Approach
Producing The Alpinist meant building a feature documentary around an athlete who rarely shared where he was going next. Marc-André Leclerc climbed primarily for himself, often disappearing into remote alpine terrain across the Canadian Rockies, Alaska, and Patagonia without cameras present.
Capturing the story required expedition logistics, helicopter access to remote mountain locations, permitting technical climbs in protected alpine terrain, and coordinating shoots within extremely narrow weather and avalanche windows where a few degrees of temperature could determine whether a climb was possible.
Outcome
Released theatrically in 2021 through Universal Pictures and Roadside Attractions, The Alpinist introduced Marc-André Leclerc’s story to global audiences. The film received widespread critical acclaim and went on to win the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Long Sports Documentary and a Critics' Choice for Best Sports Documentary, cementing its place as one of the most impactful modern climbing documentaries.
DETAILS
This project involved feature documentary production filmed across remote alpine environments in North and South America and Europe.
